Q Having upgraded OS X, when I try to access PDF files on remote sites using Safari, the page is greyed out and a message “Adobe Reader blocked for this site” appears. Firefox, Chrome, and Opera work fine, though, and my MacBook Pro is unaffected. How can I fix this?
A This is most probably an Adobe Acrobat Reader quirk.
The simplest fix is to select a PDF file in the Finder and use the Get Info… command in the File menu to check which app will open it. Change that from Acrobat Reader to Preview, and click the Change All… button, so that Preview opens all PDF files.
If that does not work, you could uninstall Acrobat Reader, and trash any files with names starting ‘AdobePDF’ from the /Library/Internet Plug-ins folder. Restart with the Shift key held down to flush caches, following which you can restart normally.
You may find it simpler, at least for the time being, to allow OS X to use Preview and the built-in support to view and print PDF documents. If you still prefer to use Acrobat Reader you could install the latest version, and change the Finder’s settings to open all PDFs using Acrobat Reader.
