Q&A: Making links in PDF files

Q I have been creating links from the contents page of a PDF document to the relevant section later in the document, using an old version of Preview. However when I saved the resulting document, every link went to one page later than I had set up, even though the links worked perfectly before saving. I cannot find any way of creating links in the current version of Preview. Do I have to use a different PDF tool?

A Older versions of Preview did try to provide the feature to add and edit links in a PDF document, but version 5.0.3 (at least) suffered from bugs like this. The most recent versions seem to have addressed the problem by doing away with this feature altogether, so that now you will have to use Adobe Acrobat Pro 2015 or another third-party PDF editor to create or edit them.

This tends to confirm the old adage that you get what you pay for.
